Compress a video to under 5 MB

5 MB is the per-file limit on Notion’s free plan, and a common cap for web forms and applicant portals. Set, press Compress, done.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Where the 5 MB limit comes from

Notion’s free plan accepts files up to 5 MB, and 5 MB is a frequent limit on job portals, online forms, forum attachments and helpdesk widgets. Short phone clips and screen recordings fit easily; longer ones need a lower resolution.

What fits into 5 MB

The compressor splits the size between picture and sound: about 96 kbit/s go to the sound, the rest to the picture. The longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets, so the resolution goes down to keep the picture clean rather than blocky:

LengthPicture bitrateResolution
15 seconds2.4 Mbit/s720p
30 seconds1.1 Mbit/s720p
1 minute525 kbit/s480p
3 minutes—too low: trim it

The target on this page is 4.8 MB — a little under 5 MB, because sites count megabytes differently and some add a few kilobytes on upload.

Tips

How it works

  1. Add one or more videos — or a whole folder.
  2. The size is already set to 4.8 MB. Every video is compressed to fit it; short clips that already fit keep their quality.
  3. Press Compress. Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded, so there is no file size limit and no queue.

Questions

How long can a 5 MB video be?

About 30 seconds at 720p or a minute at 480p with sound — or several minutes of screen recording.

Does it add a watermark?

No. CompressLab is free and adds nothing to your video.

Can I compress several videos to 5 MB at once?

Yes. Add several files or a folder — each one is compressed to 5 MB.
