Compress a video to under 8 MB

For years 8 MB was Discord’s free upload limit, and many servers, bots, forums and apps still use it. Get any clip under 8 MB in one click.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Where the 8 MB limit comes from

Discord’s free limit was 8 MB until 2023 (it is 10 MB now), and many community servers, moderation bots, forums and older chat apps kept 8 MB as their cap. If an upload says “file too large” and mentions 8 MB, this is the page.

What fits into 8 MB

The compressor splits the size between picture and sound: about 96 kbit/s go to the sound, the rest to the picture. The longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets, so the resolution goes down to keep the picture clean rather than blocky:

LengthPicture bitrateResolution
15 seconds3.9 Mbit/s1080p
30 seconds1.9 Mbit/s720p
1 minute913 kbit/s480p
3 minutes240 kbit/s240p
10 minutes—too low: trim it

The target on this page is 7.8 MB — a little under 8 MB, because sites count megabytes differently and some add a few kilobytes on upload.

How it works

  1. Add one or more videos — or a whole folder.
  2. The size is already set to 7.8 MB. Every video is compressed to fit it; short clips that already fit keep their quality.
  3. Press Compress. Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded, so there is no file size limit and no queue.

Questions

How long can an 8 MB video be?

About 15 seconds at 1080p, 30 seconds at 720p or a minute at 480p with sound.

Is Discord’s limit still 8 MB?

No — Discord raised the free limit to 10 MB, but many bots, servers and other apps still allow only 8 MB.

Is my clip uploaded?

No. Compression runs on your device; nothing is sent anywhere.
