What TVs expect
- The subtitle file in the same folder with exactly the same name as the video (LG, Sony; Samsung per user reports).
- A lowercase extension: Sony asks for “.srt”, not “.SRT”.
- Text encoding: UTF-8 is the safest; CompressLab converts Windows-1251/1252 files to UTF-8 automatically.
Built-in subtitles
Text subtitles inside MKV (SRT/ASS) are extracted to a matching .srt or burned in. Picture subtitles (PGS from Blu-ray, VobSub from DVD) can’t be turned into text in a browser — use an external SRT for those.
Questions
Can I turn burned-in subtitles off later?
No — they become part of the picture. Keep the original file if you may need it without subtitles.
