Where the 1 GB limit comes from
Microsoft Forms caps each uploaded file at 1 GB, and many upload portals, freelance marketplaces and older file-sharing tools do the same. Online compressors usually stop at 500 MB–1 GB of input — here there is no input limit at all.
What fits into 1 GB
The compressor splits the size between picture and sound: about 96 kbit/s go to the sound, the rest to the picture. The longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets, so the resolution goes down to keep the picture clean rather than blocky:
| Length | Picture bitrate | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| 10 minutes | 12.6 Mbit/s | 1080p |
| 20 minutes | 6.2 Mbit/s | 1080p |
| 30 minutes | 4.1 Mbit/s | 1080p |
| 1 hour | 2.0 Mbit/s | 720p |
| 2 hours | 960 kbit/s | 480p |
The target on this page is 980 MB — a little under 1 GB, because sites count megabytes differently and some add a few kilobytes on upload.
Tips
- 1 GB holds about 30 minutes of 1080p, an hour of 720p or two hours of 480p.
- For archiving rather than uploading, use the “Free up space” preset instead: it keeps the look of the original at the smallest size.
How it works
- Add one or more videos — or a whole folder.
- The size is already set to 980 MB. Every video is compressed to fit it; short clips that already fit keep their quality.
- Press Compress. Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded, so there is no file size limit and no queue.
Questions
How long can a 1 GB video be?
About 30 minutes at 1080p, an hour at 720p or two hours at 480p with sound.
Can I compress a 20 GB video?
Yes. Nothing is uploaded, so the original can be any size your device can store.
Which browser should I use?
Chrome or Edge on a computer are fastest. Safari 16.4+ and Firefox also work.
