Compress a video to under 500 MB

500 MB is Canvas’s media upload limit and a common cap on video platforms and forms. Keep near-original quality and upload twice as fast.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Where the 500 MB limit comes from

Canvas limits media uploads to 500 MB, X (Twitter) accepts up to 512 MB without Premium, and many video forms and portals stop at 500 MB. Phone 4K videos and camera footage pass that in minutes.

What fits into 500 MB

The compressor splits the size between picture and sound: about 96 kbit/s go to the sound, the rest to the picture. The longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets, so the resolution goes down to keep the picture clean rather than blocky:

LengthPicture bitrateResolution
10 minutes6.2 Mbit/s1080p
20 minutes3.1 Mbit/s1080p
30 minutes2.0 Mbit/s720p
1 hour960 kbit/s480p
2 hours432 kbit/s360p

The target on this page is 490 MB — a little under 500 MB, because sites count megabytes differently and some add a few kilobytes on upload.

Tips

How it works

  1. Add one or more videos — or a whole folder.
  2. The size is already set to 490 MB. Every video is compressed to fit it; short clips that already fit keep their quality.
  3. Press Compress. Everything happens in your browser: the video is never uploaded, so there is no file size limit and no queue.

Questions

How long can a 500 MB video be?

About 20 minutes at 1080p, 30 minutes at 720p or an hour at 480p with sound.

Will quality drop?

For most phone and camera videos the difference is not visible on a laptop or phone screen.

Is it really free?

Yes, free with no watermark and no account. The work is done by your device, so there is no server cost to charge for.
