Compress a video to submit it on Moodle

Each Moodle site, course and assignment has its own maximum file size — schools use anything from 10 MB to a few hundred MB. Check yours, set the slider and submit.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Find your limit

Open the assignment and press “Add submission”. The file picker shows Maximum file size for this assignment — that is the number to stay under. It can be lower than the site-wide limit, because teachers can cap each activity.

Set the size

The slider starts at 45 MB, a common safe value. Move it just under the limit your assignment shows — for example 9.5 for a 10 MB limit or 190 for a 200 MB limit.

Tips for presentations and lectures

The upload can still fail on slow Wi-Fi even under the limit — a smaller file uploads faster and fails less often.

Questions

What is the Moodle file size limit?

There is no single limit: the administrator sets a site maximum and teachers can lower it for each course or assignment. The upload dialog shows yours.

Why does Moodle say my file is too large?

The video is bigger than the assignment’s maximum file size. Compress it below that number here.

Which format should I submit?

MP4 (H.264 + AAC) plays in Moodle and on every computer. CompressLab saves MP4 by default.
