Symptoms of variable frame rate
- Audio drifts out of sync the further you go on the timeline
- Stuttering playback or dropped frames in Premiere Pro or Resolve
- MediaInfo shows “Frame rate mode: Variable”
What this preset does
- Re-encodes at a constant frame rate (the average of the source)
- High quality H.264 that never exceeds the source bitrate
- A keyframe every second for snappy scrubbing on the timeline
- 48 kHz AAC audio — the editing standard
Questions
Why does audio go out of sync in Premiere?
Usually because the clip has a variable frame rate. Converting it to constant frame rate fixes the drift.
Does it lower the quality?
The “very high” quality level is used and capped at the source bitrate, so the difference is not visible.
