Compress a video so it sends on Messenger

Facebook Messenger has long limited files to about 25 MB per attachment; bigger videos fail to send or get squeezed badly. Make it fit before you send.

Your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

The Messenger limit

The commonly reported limit is 25 MB per video, the same as for other files. Meta has been raising file limits in 2025, but 25 MB still goes through everywhere — including older app versions and the web version — so the target here is set just under it.

What fits into 25 MB

The size is reached by lowering the bitrate first and the resolution only when needed, so short clips keep full quality.

On a phone

Open this page in Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, add the video from the gallery and press Compress. When it is done, the Share button sends the result straight to Messenger. On Android you can also install CompressLab as an app and share videos to it from the gallery.

Questions

What is the Messenger video size limit?

About 25 MB per video is the long-standing limit; newer app versions may accept more, but 25 MB works everywhere.

Why does Messenger say the video can’t be sent?

Usually it is too large or in a format the app can’t process. An MP4 under 25 MB sends reliably.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

No. It is compressed on your device; only the finished file goes to Messenger when you send it.
