Find your limit
- Your school’s Blackboard help page or IT knowledge base lists it — search “Blackboard maximum file size” with your university’s name.
- Typical values are 100, 200 or 250 MB; a few schools allow 1–2.5 GB.
- If videos must go through Panopto, Kaltura or YuJa, upload there and submit the link — those platforms accept large files.
The slider starts at 240 MB. Set it just under your school’s number — 95 for 100 MB, 190 for 200 MB.
What fits
- 240 MB: about 20 minutes at 720p or half an hour at 480p.
- Recorded slides and screen captures stay readable at much lower sizes — they barely move.
Big uploads can time out on campus Wi-Fi even under the limit; a smaller file submits more reliably.
Questions
What is the Blackboard file size limit?
There is no single one — administrators set it. Many schools use 100–250 MB per file.
Why does Blackboard reject my video?
It is over your school’s limit, or your school routes videos through Panopto, Kaltura or YuJa instead.
Which format should I submit?
MP4 (H.264 + AAC) plays in every browser. CompressLab saves MP4 by default.
