What the chip decides
| Chip (boxes) | Video it handles reliably |
|---|---|
| Amlogic S805 (MXQ, M8S) | H.264 / 8-bit HEVC up to 1080p |
| Amlogic S905, S905X, S905W (X96 Mini, TX3 mini) | H.264, HEVC 10-bit (S905W: unreliable); no Hi10P |
| Amlogic S905X2/X3/X4 (X96 Max, Ugoos, GT King) | H.264 4K, HEVC 10-bit 4K60, VP9; AV1 on X4 |
| Allwinner H313/H616/H618 (X96Q, T95) | H.264 up to 4K30, HEVC 10-bit |
| Rockchip RK3229 (MXQ Pro 4K, V88) | Reliably 1080p |
| Rockchip RK3318/RK3328 (H96 Max, X88) | H.264, HEVC 10-bit 4K |
The stock player on cheap boxes often lacks Dolby and DTS: AAC stereo is the safe choice. Kodi or VLC play more, but not every family member wants to use them.
Questions
My box says “4K” — why does 4K stutter?
Many budget boxes decode 4K only at 30 fps or only in HEVC, and their USB ports and storage are slow. 1080p H.264 is the safe target.
