A HandBrake alternative that runs in your browser
HandBrake is the free, open-source desktop compressor everyone recommends — and it deserves it. But it has to be installed, and it has no “make it 10 MB” box: you pick a quality or a bitrate and check the result. CompressLab works like HandBrake (on your own computer, nothing uploaded) but in a browser tab, with an exact target size.

When HandBrake is the better choice
- You want every knob: x264/x265/SVT-AV1 tuning, filters, deinterlacing, chapters, many audio and subtitle tracks.
- You compress the same kind of files every day and don’t mind installing an app.
- You need formats a browser can’t write, such as MKV with several subtitle tracks or 10-bit HEVC.
When CompressLab is the better choice
- You can’t or don’t want to install software — a work laptop, a school Chromebook, a friend’s PC.
- You need a file under an exact size: HandBrake’s Social presets assume a fixed length (“25 MB, 1 minute”), CompressLab fits each clip to the size you set.
- You want the result on a phone: CompressLab runs in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone and shares the result straight to a messenger.
- You also need quick extras: trimming without re-encoding, Whisper subtitles, videos for a TV from a USB stick.
What CompressLab can’t do
- Speed depends on your device: a recent laptop compresses an hour of 1080p in minutes, an old phone is much slower.
- It needs a modern browser — Chrome, Edge or Opera, Safari 16.4+ or Firefox on a computer. Firefox on Android can’t encode video yet.
- It is a set of focused tools (compress, trim, subtitles, TV), not a full editor with text, music and transitions.
Try it
Drop a video on the compressor, pick what it is for — Discord, email, WhatsApp, “free up space” — or set your own size, and press Compress. No account, no upload, no watermark.
